IT'S A WRAP: NOT-SO-BASIC BASICS

When shopping on a shoestring budget, the best way to stretch your wardrobe is to invest in not-so-basic basics. Let us explain. Basics are your good ol' plain white t's, your LBDs and your run-of-the-mill cut off denim. But when you're short on change or even if you want to be savvy and make the most of your pieces, a cut out or even an exposed zipper can take your wardrobe staple of a white t to the next level. Having a handful of not-so-basic basics can help to spice up your outfits and create the illusion of a well thought out look on those I-couldn't-care-less days.

We picked up some not-so-basic basics from Oasap which we are excited about. We were happy with the quality, but were again disappointed with the time it took for the package to arrive on our doorsteps. We put our order in in November, but only received it a few days before Christmas. So if you're ordering for a special occasion or as a gift, keep this in mind.

As students, comfort and ease is the key to our outfits when we've got a full day of uni. When we're running between classes, we don't have time to catch a glimpse in the mirror and make adjustments to what we're wearing, and we have even less brain juice to think about anything else besides textbook readings and deadlines. So when we spotted this grey shirt on Oasap, we knew it would come in handy. The top is deceivingly simple, but do a 180, and you'll see that the back is criss-crossed. Something like this is perfect for throwing over a pair of shorts or jeans for a quick chic look.

The good thing about not-so-basic basics are that they require less styling and accessorising than your standard basic pieces. You can either go big and whip on a statement necklace, an armful of bracelets and stack of your favourite rings, or you can keep it minimal like we did.

These quilted shorts are the perfect alternative to the standard black shorts we all have sitting in our cupboards. It's subtle enough to be a versatile piece that can be paired with anything you throw at it, but it's also fancy enough to have others doubling back for a second look. These shorts are incredibly soft and comfy, which again is key for us, but the fabric is slightly thicker than we had anticipated. These shorts are boxy, so if you prefer your bottoms to be more tailored and form fitting, they probably aren't for you.

  5. I realized I had not so basic basics and also not much basics at all, which I'm attempting to change for this year but I'll guess for in store shopping it would be Zara or Mango, and online ASOS, Shopbop with great discounts and wherever else I could find something that I'll find fitting, comfy and stylish enough for me :)

  8. I definitely agree about the not-so-basic basic. It changes up an outfit. Little elements like that are great; which is also coincidentally why accessories are so important (and I need to employ them more often I think).
